It’s that time again! DIY Friday! This week we will be creating Easter Chick Placeholders in full preparation for Easter! We chose to do this cute craft as a way to mark our seats during Easter Supper. They’re super cute and full of personality!

You will need:

  • A Terra Cotta Pot
  • A Plastic Spoon
  • Floral Foam
  • A Plastic Butter Knife
  • Ribbon
  • Spray Adhesive and/or glue
  • Paint colors of your choice
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scissors
  • Construction Paper
  • Easter Grass
  • Blow Dryer

To Begin:

  1. Begin by cutting your foam into a cube large and small enough to fit snug into your terra cotta pot. This will be the foundation for our spoon.
  2. Next using glue spray adhesive, glue your foam down to the inside of your terra cotta pot. Allow this time to dry.
  3. While you’re waiting for your glue to dry, flip your terra cotta pot upside down so the bottom is facing you. Using your favorite color(s) apply a few generous coats of paint to your pot.
  4. Don’t forget to decorate your pot! Add glitter, rhinestones or make simple polka dots as we did.
  5. While your pot dries completely, we’ll work on painting our spoon next. Paint the spoon your color of choice – we recommend painting the concave side so the other side appears shiny. Paint black dots for the eyes, an orange upside down triangle for the nose, rosy cheeks, hair or whatever your heart desires. Allow time to dry.
  6. If your pot is still wet, we recommend using a hair dryer to help speed up the process. But don’t use the blow dryer on the spoons! Heat melts plastic believe it or not – we had to find out the hard way.
  7. Tie a bow around your little chick’s neck using pretty ribbon.
  8. Next, on a 1.5 x .5 inch piece of paper, write your name and polka dots on either side. Add a dab of glue and stick your name tag to your chick.
  9. Once everything is dry, stick your spoon into the foam. Use the butter knife to make a slit in the foam your spoon can slide into.
  10. Finally, to cover the foam, we’ll douse it in spray adhesive or glue, then top it off with our Easter Grass. It helps to ball the shreds up in your hand and stick them in the pot.
